Fantasy Pups
Invariably after eating their gruel, the puppies get frisky and love to growl and play!

So our feeding set-up was not ideal: puppies spent more time wading and surfing through their food then actually eating it. So we acquired a new dish for their puppy gruel which has significantly reduced the clean up.
The new food dish has a "mountain" of stainless steel in the middle, with a "moat" around the edge for liquid gruel. The mountain discourages those pups who would just walk across the dish to get to the other side. It seems to work well so far. Hurray! There is a legend that dumb animals can talk on Christmas Eve. Although that legend is just that, our little puppies sure made themselves heard! For today was their first meal -- puppy gruel! Recipe:
After dinner, everyone took a stroll through their food, and licked their brothers' and sister's faces clean. As you can see from the photos, their first Christmas dinner was quite a mess! Oh yes, and it wouldn't be a holiday meal unless Mom was involved, so there was one more step.
lIf you're a puppy -- and I confess it is very unlikely that you are -- then your nails grow fast and sharp. And if you are a puppy's Mama -- again, unlikely -- then that presents a problem, because puppies love to use their paws to massage their mamas to encourage the milk to flow. And that can leave a lot of scratches.
So today all the pups got a pedicure. But if you are a puppy pedicurist -- I am and you will be one soon! -- then that can also present a problem, at least if you have six squirming puppies, four of which are little boys that are virtually indistinguishable in size and color. That's because you don't want to give the same puppy two pedicures in a single day, which would result in over-trimming. Solution: put a spot of holiday-colored marker on each puppy's paw when the pedicure is over. So that's what we did, and while we were at it, we marked different paws on each dog so that we could tell who is who. Dasher (pictured below at the beginning of his pedicure) ended up getting a red spot on his right back paw. It's time to start planning ofr the Puppy Visitation Day! I have six appointment times for the January 6th Puppy Visitation Day,
Unless you intend to pick your puppy from pictures, please send me an email as soon as possible letting me know whether a morning or afternoon visit works best for you. Ideally visits should not overlap, though we allow some flexibility for unavoidable circumstances. I ask that visitors come 15 minutes in advance of their appointment in order to make sure each visiting family has a full half hour appointment: 15 minutes minutes with the puppy and 15 minutes to talk with me. This also gives the puppies a rest between visits. Visitors should expect heavy Interstate traffic, and plan to come early. You can pass the time at Chancellorsville, a major Civil War Battlefield, which is very close to my home. It has a fascinating Museum Exhibit (free) that you will want to see before or after your puppy visit, and an inexpensive film ($2 but free for kids under 10yrs) on the four major Civil War battles that occurred in this county. Dress warmly and you can even take a pleasant walk to a civil war trench near my home - weather permitting.
The puppies have opened their eyes at last! And what a world they see. It's puppies everywhere... ...and Mama Marshmellow! But they still don't walk too good. :-)
Nevertheless, these little pups are scooting from one end of their whelping pen exploring their little world. It won't be long before I will need to move them into something bigger, with higher walls! It's a tough life for a puppy! Eat, sleep, grow. Already the break between meals is getting longer, giving Marshmellow more time with the rest of the family. Today I snuck into the birthing room to see what was up and guess what? Meal time!
RESERVATIONS LIST
Marshmellow was bred to Ricky the Red Poodle People in the list below have placed their deposit to reserve a puppy from Marshmellow's November 2017 litter. Deposits are listed in the order they were received. Marshmellow's Litter
The pups are now well into their second week and their noses are changing from the birth-pink to their darker coloration. It is so cute to see their black little noses against their light apricot faces! Marshmellow is already a little less attached to her pups. Used to be we could not pry her away from them to eat or use the potty, but now, if they are sleeping, she will come out of the whelping room to see what's up with the family. One little squeak from her litter, however, and instinct kicks into high gear!
