Fantasy Pups
Every night before bedtime, the puppies get their third meal of the day, then they play themselves to exhaustion... then the whole house settles down for the night. Last night was the first night since Christmas Eve that the puppies all slept through the whole night!

Calliope has three postures: sleeping, waking, taking a break from the pups... and that last one only started today. Calliope's pups turned two weeks today and one of the pups opened her eyes a crack! My son relocated the newborns' pen into the living room and moved Marshmellow's pups out of the foyer into a pen in the living room beside Calli's pups. It doesn't look like anything out of Architecture Digest, but he says it is important that the puppies adjust to hearing the sounds of an active home all day long. So not only will the puppies get their twice daily belly rubs and foot messages and ear tugs, but now they will also watch me do my housework, share Turner Classic Movies with me, and get the updates on the government shutdown. Calli is a great mother. She never leaves the puppies' side! Her idea of a break is to lay down a foot away. The other adult dogs are very interested in Calli's tiny additions and their constant squeaks. They had been scoping out Marshmellow's pups, but had been kept away from Calli's, so today their curiosity was finally satisfied. And now I always know when Marshmellow's puppies are awake to play because my dogs all run to the living room to watch the action. Today Marshmellow's pups had their first solid food. My son put them all in the "mess hall", a special pool that is easy for us to clean up. At first, Cooper was the only puppy to show any interest in the goo. He immediately started lapping up the wet paste of chicken kibble, but the rest did not know what it was. I thought we might have to given them a few more days, but my son decided to stick a finger of it in each of their mouths. (All except Cooper, who was trying to chow it all down before his siblings realized what he had!) Soon, they were licking up the chunks that fell to the floor of their chow pool. Eventually, my son put their noses back in the pool of kibble and they were all eating. Calliope is a Mom! She was only one day late on her delivery. She started her labor very early in the morning of Saturday the 12th, and did not present her first pup until around 10:30am. The remaining three puppies took there time coming. At around one in the afternoon, we ever cleaned up the whelping box and moved Calli to her nursery, thinking she was finished at three pups. But a fourth puppy came later on. She would not let us near them until today, and we are now pleased to announce that three boys and one girl were born.
We decided to go with a planet theme since three of the pups have stars on their foreheads, so we chose the tentative names Zeus, Mercury, Mars, and Venus. (Zeus sounded better than Jupiter, but its the same Olympian. - Jupiter is just Latin for Zeus-Pater.) Anyway, they won't have these names for long as folks fall in love with them and make them part of their families. The long wait os over! Yesterday Marshmellow's puppies opened their eyes and today we got photographs on each individual puppy. Make sure you go to the New Litter page to see the latest photographs, but here is one of Porsche to whet your appetite!
